IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (24-0, 19 KOs) scored a brilliant eleventh round knockout over extremely mandatory challenger Khoren Gevor (27-3, 15 KOs) in a grueling fight on Saturday night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin. The highly charged duel was not only a collision between two Armenia-born Germans, but a showdown between super trainers Ulli Wegner (Abraham) and Fritz Sdunek (Gevor) and German promotional powerhouses Sauerland Event (Abraham) and Universum Box-Promotion (Gevor). Southpaw Gevor started aggressively in round one, but Abraham's defense was solid. Gevor's attack was again relentless in round two, but Abraham landed some big right hands. Abraham landed another big right in round three. Gevor's workrate continued to be high while Abraham continued to find a home for lead rights as excellent two-way action continued over rounds four to six. Things heated up even more in the seventh in some vicious exchanges. Abraham launched a tremendous assault at the end of round eight that had Gevor reeling around the ring at the bell. Gevor again pressed in round nine, but Abraham again landed big shots at the end of the round. Gevor bravely continued the attack in round ten, but it was Abraham dealing the punishment. Referee Pete Podgorski looked ready to step in several times, but Gevor wouldn't stop punching and give him the opportunity. After doing most his damage with his right hand, Abraham finally knocked out Gevor with a monster left hook that violently spun Gevor's head around as he sank to the canvas. Time was 2:41 in the eleventh. It was a spectacular end to a spectacular fight.
